Type III Barricades

Breakaway barricades maintain safety, accommodating to impact and severe weather conditions, ensuring the health of highway drivers. The US Department of Transportation often fields safety expert questions regarding proper implementation of devices.

Safety Experts constantly simulate traffic patterns and collect data to improve implementations.

β€œDriver behavior is very understudied,” he says. β€œIt is a parameter of simulation modeling that needs further research. I experience nonrecurring congestion every day that could potentially be improved if the data for use in a simulation model were available.”

Breakaway barricades are engineered to withstand wear and tear of everyday conditions, while abiding to laws of physics when impacted by excessive force, maintaining the safety of immediate drivers and those within oncoming traffic.

Why does the USDOT urge traffic experts use breakaway barriers?

Roadside signs, utility poles, lighting structures, traffic signals, and other rigid objects can become deadly roadside hazards where placed where run-off-the-road vehicles may strike. While it is preferable to maintain obstacle-free roadside clear zones, this is not always a practical option. When rigid objects cannot be removed or relocated, potential crash impacts can be mitigated by specifying breakaway features, or by shielding the object with a longitudinal barrier or crash cushion.
